Sciatica Treatment in Hyderabad

Pain that travels from the lower back through the hip and down one leg, caused by pressure or inflammation along the sciatic nerve.

Also known as: Lumbar radiculopathy · Irq-un-Nasa · Pinched nerve in the lower back

1. Symptoms you may notice

  • A sharp or burning pain running from the lower back into the buttock and down one leg
  • Pain that worsens on sitting, coughing or bending forward
  • Pins and needles, numbness or a heavy feeling in the calf or foot
  • Weakness in the leg that makes stairs or standing up harder than it was

2. How Unani medicine understands it

Unani medicine describes sciatica as Irq-un-Nasa and treats it as a cold, dry derangement along the course of the nerve, in which impaired local circulation allows inflammation to persist around the compressed root. The aim of treatment is therefore not analgesia alone but restoring blood flow and resolving the inflammation that keeps the nerve irritated, so the leg pain stops returning each time a painkiller wears off.

3. What treatment involves

  1. Examination and temperament (Mizaj) assessment, with a review of any existing MRI or X-ray
  2. Hijama (wet cupping) at lumbar and gluteal points to improve local circulation and reduce pressure on the nerve root
  3. Herbal anti-inflammatory and nervine formulations such as Habb-e-Suranjan, with Roghan-e-Suranjan applied locally
  4. Posture correction, a graded set of decompression exercises, and guidance on sitting and lifting
  5. Review appointments to adjust the protocol as the leg pain recedes towards the back

When to seek urgent care instead

These are not reasons to book an appointment. If any of them applies to you, go to a hospital or call emergency services now — our clinic is not the right place for them and delay causes harm.

  • Loss of control over the bladder or bowels, or numbness around the groin and inner thighs — this needs emergency hospital assessment the same day
  • Rapidly worsening weakness in one or both legs, or a foot that drags when you walk
  • Sciatica with fever, unexplained weight loss, or a history of cancer

Frequently Asked Questions

How many Hijama sessions does sciatica usually need?

It depends on how long the pain has been present and what is compressing the nerve. Most patients are started on a course of three to six sessions spaced a week or two apart, alongside oral medication, and are reviewed after the first two to decide whether the protocol is working. Longstanding sciatica with a large disc bulge takes longer than a recent episode caused by muscular inflammation, and your physician will tell you which of those your examination suggests.

Can sciatica be treated without surgery?

A large proportion of sciatica settles without an operation, and conservative treatment is the usual first step unless there are warning signs. Our protocol combines Hijama to reduce inflammation around the nerve root, herbal anti-inflammatories, and exercises that decompress the lumbar spine. Where an examination shows progressive weakness or loss of bladder control, we refer for surgical assessment rather than continue — those are the cases where delay causes permanent damage.

Is it safe to continue my existing painkillers during treatment?

Bring them to the consultation, including the doses. Our physicians plan around medication you are already on rather than asking you to stop it, and reductions are made gradually and only once the pain has actually improved. Never stop a prescribed medicine on your own because a herbal treatment has started.

Bring your reports and your current medication. The first consultation is about establishing what is actually going on, not about selling you a course of treatment.
